DB DIGITS

Drawing inspiration from the letter of the Rector Major (With the Courage of Don Bosco on the new frontiers of Social Communication ACTS 390), Fr Pascual Chavez and as a centenary memorial initiative, the Salesian Province of Hyderabad initiated DB DIGITS, the digital media centre. This concept first emerged in September 2005 and was given a concrete shape by Fr Tharakan John (letter to the Provincial Council dated September 26, 2005). The Province encouraged this initiative and incorporating the suggestions of Fr John Lens, our veteran missionary, DB DIGITS came about in 2006.

With a distinctive feature to bridge the gap between the information rich and the information poor, the centre focuses on a deeper involvement with the young for the human and Christian transformation of the society through…

  • preparation of Software application for the Salesian apostolate, formation, communication and administration.
  • the Province website (creation, development and regular maintenance)
  • Apostolate through the media/internet through networking and collaboration
  • rendering its services as the digital media centre
  • its role as the digital archive of the Province (in collaboration with the Provincial Office)
  • the Tele-Youth movement and related online services and activities

Online Research

Over the years, DB DIGITS has served as the Communication wing of the Province. To its list of credits can be added the successfully creation of the Minimum Wages Software (PAGAR). Aimed at providing the basic information and an easy guide to draw up the minimum wage scale of every employee in the state of Andhra Pradesh, the software is now much sought after by the Government and labour organisations as well. The centre continues to update and make available this valuable source of information to this day.

The website of the Province (www.hyderabad.donboscoindia.com) now has a new look and is regularly updated. Possibilities of utilising this platform for greater apostolate and research are being explored.
