The International Women’s Day was celebrated in Don Bosco, Ponnur on 8th March. Women from Self Help Group of the locality, Women Welfare Association Group Leaders, Board of Directors and over 300 women gathered for this programme at 11 a.m. Dr. Ruth Rani, former Chairperson of Ponnur Municipality was the chief guest of the day. Mrs. Mary Lenin, Head Mistress of Municipal School, Ponnur, Fr.Jose. K, the Director of the institution, Fr.P.Arul Das, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MACS & CS (Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies) and Fr.Marreddy were the other guests of honour for the event.
Dr. Ruth Rani, in her speech highlighted on some of the important issues, women in the contemporary society need to learn. Encouraging the importance of girl child education she said “Equality cannot be attained unless the girl child’s extensive right to education is not ensured.” Mrs. Mary Lenin, implied maximum emphasis on interpreting Women Rights in the modern society. She also narrated some of her experiences of working with Self Help Groups for many years and encouraged the participants to save money for a productive purpose. Fr.Jose. K articulated his opinions on the role of modern women in the family and society. Fr.P.Arul Das in his interaction with the assembly opined that small savings on consistent basics were instrumental for the growth of rural family and briefed the gathering about the strategies Don Bosco, Ponnur was following in order to facilitate Women Empowerment.
Cultural programmes performed by the members were insightful. The Chief Guest felicitated the Best employees of the Year 2012 -13 Mrs.Vimala Kumari and Mrs. Shantha Kumari with shawl while Fr.Marreddy distributed prizes to the winners of various games organized on this occasion.
The Don Bosco Society, Ponnur is working for the empowerment of women through Community Based Organization (Self Help Groups) in three Mandals: Chaitanya MACS, Pittlavanipalem, Mother Teresa MACS in Bapatla, and Kakumanu Mother Teresa MACS in Kakumanu. The three mandals are registered under government Mahila Mutually Aided Cooperative Thrift & Credit Society Ltd.,. At present Don Bosco, Ponnur has more than 250 Self Help Groups with 2500 women as members.
