Ravulapalem, August 20: The Clerics of the Province of St. Joseph, Hyderabad, came together at People’s Action for Rural Awakening (PARA), Ravulapalem, for a two-day formative meeting that combined spirituality with a keen engagement with India’s current socio-political realities. The event, hosted by the PARA community and animated by Fr. Thomas Pallithanam and his team, revolved around the theme “Understanding the Socio-Political Context that Affects Salesian Ministry to the Young.”
The gathering began with prayer and words of welcome from Fr. Garlapati Michael Kishore, Vice Provincial, setting the tone for an intense and inspiring program. Through thought-provoking inputs, discussions, and interactive sessions, the participants were led to reflect on the meaning of faith, the values enshrined in the Constitution, and the challenges that threaten democracy, justice, and equality in today’s society.
Fr. Pallithanam invited the participants to re-examine what it means to say “I believe,” drawing inspiration from Moses, Don Bosco, and Martin Luther King Jr. He urged the participants to stand firm in their values and engage with the beliefs of today’s youth. His reflections on the rising dangers of hate speech, extremist ideologies, and manipulation of religion and food practices provided a sobering picture of the social environment in which Salesian ministry unfolds.
The sessions featured contributions from civil society leaders such as Mr. Edida Rajesh (Human Rights Forum), Mr. Gutta Rohit, and Mr. Pavan, who offered insights into India’s judiciary, economy, and citizen participation. Their inputs highlighted how democracy depends on active engagement, and how constitutional rights must be defended with courage.
The PARA team further presented their grassroots initiatives in villages and schools, showcasing how awareness-building and empowerment help marginalised communities access their entitlements. Sessions also covered SC/ST rights, land revenue challenges, and programs for differently-abled persons. Fr. John Tharakan deepened the formation process with a presentation on the Preventive System and sociocracy, emphasising appreciation of the young and inclusive decision-making.
In their reflections, the clerics unanimously acknowledged the need to study and teach the Constitution, remain socially aware, and stand fearlessly for justice. They also underlined the importance of patience in the Preventive System and the prophetic role of Salesians in forming youth for citizenship.
Fr. Michael Kishore, in his closing address, encouraged fidelity to prayer, responsible use of mobile phones, careful handling of finances, and openness to spiritual direction. He also announced upcoming summer formation programs and retreats.
