HISTORY

The corporation was not happy with the progress of the work for the street children. The reach out programme was neglected and so the corporation was having second thoughts and it was about to take back the premises. At this juncture, Fr. Thomas Koshy, with his winning ways and accommodative spirit, won over the officials and the work for the street children received a new impetus. The premises were christened Nava Jeevan Bala Bhavan.

Immediately several new initiatives were started with children going to school, foster care homes, for others re-orientation camps, Yuva Bhavan for working youth and round the clock shelter for anyone who needed a place. In 1993, Fr. Koshy took over the reigns from Fr. Roy. Nava Jeevan received the National Award for child welfare in 1996.

In 1997, the Government of Andhra Pradesh recognized Nava Jeevan Bala Bhavan as a fit institution under section 13 (1) of the Juvenile Justice Act, 1986. As per this government order, Nava Jeevan Bala Bhavan was allowed to admit abandoned children and to take custody of children committed by Juvenile Court / Juvenile welfare board.
