HISTORY

St. Paul’s Regional Seminary at Nuzvid, in the diocese of Vijayawada, in Andhra Pradesh, is a major seminary, which belongs to the Andhra Pradesh Bishops Conference and is at present managed by the salesians of Don Bosco. This seminary was established by the APBC on 5thJjuly, 1984, following the directives of the circular letter from the Holy See concerning some of the more urgent aspects of spiritual formation in seminaries, dated 6th January, 1980.

The Episcopal delegate for this seminary is the bishop of Vijayawada, the local ordinary. After two years of management, by the diocese of Vijayawada with an MSFS Rector, according to the agreement signed by the Episcopal delegate and the Salesian Provincial of Bangalore in April 1986. The administration of this seminary was handed over to the salesians of Don Bosco for a period of three years, renewable for periods of ten years each and the salesian provincial is responsible for th efficient and smooth running of this seminary. The first set of salesian staff consisted of Fr. Florence Zola, Fr. K.T. Jose and Br. C.J.. Mathew. In 1989, the contract was renewed by the Episcopal delegate and the salesian provincial of the province of Bangalore for ten years.

In May 1992, the Seminary was canonically erected as a Salesian house with Fr. Thomas Thottiyil as Rector, Fr. KM. Sebastian as Vice – Rector and Administrator and Cl. M. Vijaya Reddy as cleric in practical training.

SCOPE

St. Paul’s regional seminary at Nuzvid offers one-year spiritual orientation course. This course is organized on the model of the novitiate of the religious with the adaptations necessary for diocesan seminarians. It is the privileged intermittent time to impart basic intensive integral spiritual training of the seminarians by means of human, moral, intellectual and above all spiritual formation with solid reflection on the concrete state of life of their Christian and priestly vocation. This course aims at helping them to become holy and dedicated priests. The scope also included promotion of vocations to Salesian way of life.

  1. The scope of the Seminary is to make possible the human maturing of the Seminarians.
  2. To deepen the Seminarians’ spiritual life and prepare them intellectually in order to prepare them to philosophical studies.
  3. It helps him to decide upon his vocation.
  4. It helps them to become true shepherd of the people of God after the example of our Lord.
