Salesian Priest Leaves Lasting Legacy in the Footsteps of Don Bosco
“Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his saints.” (Psalms 116:15)
With profound sadness, the Salesian community of Don Bosco Philosophate, Karunapuram bid farewell to Fr Kudiyirippil James SDB, a devote priest and faithful disciple of Don Bosco’s charism, passed away on July 5, 2024. For decades, Father James dedicated his life to serving the young and the poor, embodying the very spirit of love and compassion that defined Don Bosco’s ministry.
Born on October 5, 1944 at Kalady, Kerala, inspired by the salesians commitment to education, evangelization, and youth empowerment. Father James was drawn to the Salesian vocation at a very young age, He stepped into the congregation in 1962, at Tirupattur pre-novitiate house. After completing his novitiate in Yercaud (1963-64) and theological studies at Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore (1969-73), he was ordained a priest on December 16, 1972 in Vaduthala. For several years, he served in various Salesian communities, tirelessly working to advance the mission of Don Bosco. Father James’ ministry was marked by his unwavering dedication to the marginalized and vulnerable. He spent many years working in schools, youth centers, and other set ups, always putting the needs of others before his own. His gentle kindness, warm smile, and listening ear made him a beloved figure among the young people he served. He had a special gift for reaching out to those on the periphery, showing them the love and care that they so desperately needed.
One of Father James’ most notable legacies was his work in establishing and directing the Don Bosco Bhavan in Manuthy (1973-1980). This vibrant hub of activity provided a safe haven for countless young people, offering them a chance to learn, grow, and thrive in a supportive environment. Under his guidance, the Bhavan became a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of love and compassion.
Fr. James’ time in Karunapuram was a remarkable chapter in his life and ministry (2001-2004) (2017-2024). Living alongside his philosophy brothers, he embodied the spirit of community and mutual support. Together, they explored the depths of philosophy, challenging each other to grow in wisdom and understanding.
Fr. James’ presence in Karunapuram was a gift to all who knew him. He brought a sense of joy, compassion, and authenticity that inspired others to embrace their own unique journey. His love for life, his infectious laughter, and his willingness to listen and learn from others created a sense of belonging and connection among the community. During his stay, Fr. James’ door was always open, welcoming anyone who sought guidance, comfort, or simply a listening ear. His humility, empathy, and wisdom created a safe space for hearts to open and share their struggles and dreams. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and intellectual curiosity that will continue to inspire and guide those who knew him in Karunapuram.
Father James’ life was a testament to the enduring legacy of Don Bosco, who once said, “My dear young friends, I want you to be happy in this life and in the next. That is why I work tirelessly for your benefit, to prepare you for a happy eternity.” Father James’ selfless devotion to the young and the poor was a shining example of this very spirit. He leaves behind a community that is grieving, yet grateful for the time they had with him. As we bid farewell to this faithful servant of God, we take comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will endure. The countless lives he touched, the hearts he healed, and the hope he instilled will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in peace, dear Fr. James. Your love and service will never be forgotten.
I’m reeling from the loss of Fr. James, who passed away on July 5, 2024. As his secretary, I had the privilege of taking care of him in medication and witnessing his unwavering dedication to the mission of community through chaplaincies and other activities in community. But it was at his deathbed that I saw the true depth of his love and compassion. As I held his hand and looked into his eyes, I saw a glimpse of the divine. He was at peace, surrounded by the love of God and the prayers of those who adored him. In that moment, I felt his legacy being passed on to me, a reminder to continue his work of spreading love and kindness.
Fr. James’ impact on my life cannot be measured. He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself, and he pushed me to be more. He taught me that love is not just a feeling but a choice, and that every day we have the power to choose love, compassion, and kindness. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, including mine. I will miss him dearly, but I know that he is now in the presence of God enjoying the eternal bliss, and that his love and spirit will continue to guide me and so many others.
