The training of the trainers on ‘Gender Equity Education’ was organized on 5th & 6th July for the Salesian family members, Co-operators and like-minded people at Don Bosco Navajeevan Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with SPCSA, Delhi.
Various topics based on Gender Equity were dealt by Sr Nirmala SAL, who is a lawyer by profession. The concept of gender sensitivity was developed as a way to reduce barriers to personal and economic development created by sexism. Gender sensitivity helps to generate respect for the individual regardless of sex.
Sr Nirmala shed light on the topic explaining that, gender sensitivity is not about pitting women against men. On the contrary, education that is gender sensitive benefits the members of both sexes. It helps them determine which assumptions in matters of gender are valid and which are stereotyped generalizations. Gender awareness requires not only intellectual effort but also sensitivity and open-mindedness. This brought great awareness and widened the knowledge of 36 participants from various branches of the Salesian family.
In the post lunch session, Sr Philo Joseph enlightened the participants on the topic of child psychology and the various types of violence women face from womb to tomb. The participants were trained in the module for Gender Equity Education (GEE) in schools with wit and wisdom, and some creative methods.
The creative presentations by various groups on different topics showed their seriousness and enthusiasm about their participation. Many expressed that their joy was doubled to come together as Salesian family members under one umbrella. It was also a beautiful experience to come to know the different branches of the Salesian family, working with one single purpose: educating the young.
The two day seminar came to a conclusion with a wonderful session on drawing out an action plan by each Salesian family for the current academic year 2016-17. It was a meticulous work done with great care and vision.
We are especially grateful to Fr Noel SDB the Salesian family delegate who made this opportunity available for us. Fr Noel thanked the provincials and Superiors of FMA, SMI, Disciples, MMM, SJAS, Holy Spirit and DSA who sent their sisters to take part in this seminar.
