Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK), 14 May 2020: Bosco Seva Kendra has been actively responding to Covid-19 and its aftermath effects in reaching out the people in need.
According to the Economic Survey of India 2017, the magnitude of inter-state migration in India was close to 9 million annually between 2011 and 2016, while Census 2011 hooks the total number of internal migrants in the country (accounting for inter- and intra-state movement) at a staggering 139 million. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are the biggest source states, followed closely by Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal; the major destination states are Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.
According to the India Labour Migration Update 2018, despite decades of growth in India, the overall proportion of informal workers in total employment (e.g., unorganized sector workers plus informal workers in the organized sector) has remained relatively stable, at around 92 per cent. Hence, a majority of the Indian workforce deals with some level of informality in their employment. Coupled with a national unemployment rate of 3.4 per cent in 2017-18, the opportunities to find formal employment with decent wages and job security are restricted.
The estimates show that about six lakh migrant workers from 24 states are working in Telangana and nearly two lakh people might have crossed state borders to their native places due to Covid-19 and its long lockdown.
In this scenario where the number of Migrants is on its rise, the BSK paved its way to distribute 10000 faces masks, 1000 hygiene and health kits and Food & 400 Nutrition Kits to migrant and brick layers, children and women at various places in Telangana in a single day responding to the invitation of Pope Francis’ “Acts of Charity” during covid-19 pandemic. The locations of the distribution are: Nimboliadda, Kachiguda, Saidabad, NTR Nagar, Sai Nagar, Chandrayangutta, Badangipet, Hubdulpurmet, Hayathnagar, Shamshabad, Manchirevula, Gudimalkapur, Kukatpally, Bowenpally, Jawahaarnagar, Naredmet, Boduppal, Moulali, Badichoudi, Ramkoti, Ghatkesar, Kachiguda, Yadadri Dt, Amangal Mandal and Medak Dt.
Fr Thathireddy Vijaya Bhasakar, Provincial of the Province of St Joseph, Hyderabad, Fr Bellamkonda Sudhakar, Executive Director, BSK, Fr Parri Sarath, Assistant Director, BSK and CSOs, volunteers, local coordinators and leaders have participated in each location wherever possible leaving a Corona message that health is wealth and each of us have the responsibility to stay at home, use face masks and sanitizers following a social distance in fighting against Covid-19. Fr Bellamkonda Sudhakar expressed his gratitude to all the international, national, and local benefactors who generously contributed towards the Food, Hygiene and Health Safety kits.
