Bosco Seva Kendra, Hyderabad, 8 April 2020: India has imposed a 21-day lockdown till April 14 to curb the coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, all domestic and international commercial passenger flights have been halted for this time period. However, cargo flights, offshore helicopter operations, medical evacuation flights and special flights permitted by Indian aviation regulator Director General of Civil Aviation are permitted to operate during the lockdown. This results in the abandonment of the third-class workers and migrants from Jammu & Kashmir, Assam & Jarkhand as they cannot go back to their homes due to lockdown and are starving without essential commodities.
Consequently, the Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK) stepped in to provide essential grocery packages at Shamshabad Village, near Vegetable Market. The groceries included Rice-200 Kgs, Onions-15 Kgs, Dal-10 Kgs and Oil – 15 Ltrs. The thirty-four (34) migrants from Jammu & Kashmir, Assam & Jarkhand work as luggage carriers, attenders, sweepers, cleaners, trash bin cleaners, gardeners etc., at the International Rajiv Gandhi Airport, Shamshabad, Hyderabad have no job now and need food due to a nationwide lockdown announced on Tuesday amid the Covid-19 outbreak. Fr Sarath, the assistant Executive Director spent valuable time with these migrants insisting on the precautionary measures to stop the virus and be safe in staying at home.
