Don Bosco Prem Nivas, Mangalagiri, 8 April, 2020: Millions of migrant workers have been fleeing the towns and cities amid the COVID-19 pandemic and as everyone calls it the ‘long march of India’. It is necessary though to observe the most rigid lockdowns in the history of our country to curb the spread of the virus. However, the entire notion of lockdown and our attempt against COVID-19 is based on the idea that we have a house, a secure place. Nonetheless, migrant workers, are unable to pay rents for their homes or afford food for their families, forced to make the hard choice between their physical death and economic situation in an unavoidable urban set up.
The central and state governments were clearly slow to realise the problem, which would defeat the purpose of quarantine. The mass emigration creates a bigger health problem as migrants return to their villages that have unfitting healthcare amenities.
Don Bosco Prem Nivas caters to the handicapped children while running school for the neediest poor of the locality since 40 years. At this point of Covid-19 Pandemic, while scanning the situation in and around Mangalgri, the Salesians have scanned the area to find out such migrants.
