Don Bosco Institutions at Warangal and Ravulapalem, 18 August 2020: Many districts around capital city Hyderabad, especially Warangal which include Hanumankonda, Kazipet and Warangal towns, have been severely hit by the rains. According to the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) data, Warangal district received a total of 426.2 mm rainfall with Hanamkonda registering 223 mm of rainfall or what is equivalent to half of the season’s rain in a day. Large parts of Warangal have been inundated and a chunk of the national highway washed away, making it difficult for people to move to safety. Hanumakonda town and adjoining areas have turned into lakes as the municipal authorities failed to clear storm water drains.

Over 600 buildings have been declared vulnerable. Thousands of huts and small houses have collapsed, main roads were damaged, and Lakhs of trees uprooted, and hundreds of electric posts were strewn across streets and pavements due to heavy downpour. The damage caused is large scale, destroying physical infrastructure like transportation, communication, power, water and sanitary systems including habitation in Coastal, Rural and Tribal villages.

Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK) is working in the COVID-19 response in the operational state of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and South Odisha. BSK thus far reached to 452928 beneficiaries. With the help of partners, volunteers, and community leaders, families to undertake the relief services for poor migrant families and provide food and health and hygiene kits services for families living in slums areas in the state of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and South Odisha. Compounded with this COVID-19 pandemic the damage caused due to this torrential rain is indescribable, damaging physical infrastructure, transportation, communication, power, water, and sanitary systems including habitation in the communities. The major concern right now is to access for immediate food supply, Non-food items, repair of damaged houses and restoration of the livelihoods of the affected people. Therefore, the affected need to be supplied as earliest as possible with relief materials such as rice, dal, oil, sugar, onions, and kerosene. Non-food items like bed sheets, towels, and utensils to recover from their pathetic condition and also to repair the damaged houses and restoration of the livelihood .The Salesian communities which are in existence for the past 25 years in the district of Warangal and East Godavari will be involved in the relief work for 1000 flood victims and their families.
