BIRDY, Hyderabad, 31 January 2020: The DB Youth Zone is a social and recreational center intended primarily for the use by youth ages 15 to 24 years. The DBYZ supports opportunities for youth to develop their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive abilities and to experience achievement, leadership, enjoyment, friendship and recognition. While unstructured activities are an essential part of a DBYZ, these are staffed facilities and control and supervision are critical elements. These elements impact facility design as do considerations for youth-friendly and youth-appealing design. Safety is also taken of paramount importance. It is particularly effectively to organize the activity spaces around the Commons-making it the heart of the programme area around which the other program spaces revolve.
The idea of DBYZ was the initiative of Fr Gaddam Carlo sdb, and Fr Parri Sarath while they were at Germany. The dream has been realized as they facilitated monetary help through Bonn, Germany via BSK, the development office of the Province of Hyderabad.
Thus, the DBYZ room was inaugurated on the feast of Don Bosco at 4.30 pm by Rev Fr Thathireddy Vijaya Bhaskar amidst the youth of BIRDY, Salesians from various communities of the city of Hyderabad and volunteers from Austria.
Fr Raja Donthi led the entire ceremony. Fr Sarath briefly described the background of the proposal and thanked Petrus Stiftung, Pater Bihlmayer Stiftung, Don Bosco Mission, Bonn. He said that the DB Youth Zone is the principal social gathering point and fulfills many of the social interaction goals of the facility. It usually includes subareas such as a game area, an eating area (adjacent to the snack bar), a television (TV) viewing area, and general gathering/conversation spaces. These room accommodate social units of 30 to 40 youth gathering in pockets.
Fr Provincial thanked the donors, the community of BIRDY for setting it up in 20 days and the youth present. He told that “The DBYZ offers organized instructional programs for physical activities such as dance, crafts, and theater. It also offers opportunities for unstructured activities such as game playing, socializing, reading books related to youth, club meetings, watching meaningful movies pertaining to youth, group discussion and sharing, career guidance”. He added “As per the proposal the project title was DB Chill and thrill has been changed into DB Youth Zone something more befitting of a catholic religious order. Which was suggested by the provincial and council members”.
Ms Sharon, one of the active youth members proposed a vote of thanks. The ceremony was concluded with tea snacks.
